Punjab Ministers Walk Out Of Meeting To Decide New Excise Policy

“The government needs to change its excise policy. The daily license fee is around Rs 2 lakh and amid the lockdown, we don’t have much sales,” liquor contractor Inderjeet Singh stated.

Some contractors say they’re frightened that dwelling supply of liquor as directed by the Supreme Court could encourage bootlegging.

“Home delivery of liquor is a difficult task with many challenges. This system can also promote bootlegging and also has chances of spreading coronavirus,” one other liquor contractor Sachin Sood stated.

Punjab earns over Rs 550 crore excise obligation from liquor gross sales each month.

The state authorities’s transfer to open liquor retailers has been criticised by the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal, whose leaders and employees have been distributing milk exterior liquor retailers.

“Had the government shown the alacrity in opening ration shops, the mass exodus of labourers could have been stopped,” Akali chief Daljeet Cheema stated.

The standoff with the contractors and now bureaucrats is a giant problem for the state authorities, which hoped that its income assortment will get higher as soon as liquor retailers are opened.
