Two more Indian gaur treated after objects get caught in their hooves in Nilgiris

Two extra Indian gaur needed to be tranquilised and handled after objects discarded by individuals inside reserve forests led to the animals getting entangled in them.

The Forest division stated that two Indian gaur, one at S. Kaikatty and one other at Sakthi Malai in Kotagiri, had gotten their hooves caught in two chrome steel vessels. If left untreated, the vessels finally would minimize off circulation to the animal’s hooves and result in an infection, finally leading to a sluggish, painful loss of life, Forest division officers acknowledged. On receiving details about the animals, the Forest division mobilised veterinarians to tranquilise and take away the objects from the animals’ hooves.

Over the previous few months, a minimum of 10 Indian gaur have been noticed and handled with discarded waste getting caught round their hooves. The Forest division has as soon as once more urged residents to not discard waste in reserve forests.
