Bengal Witnessing Spurt in Domestic Violence Cases During Lockdown: Women’s Commission

“Incidents of domestic violence against women have gone up since April and the trend continues in May. Many such cases were repeats of pre-lockdown incidents,” Gangopadhyay advised PTI.

There have been contemporary incidents of home violence whereas most of the complainants have been being abused since lengthy and have been subjected to contemporary bodily and psychological torture in the course of the ongoing lockdown, Gangopadhyay mentioned, including that many of the abused ladies are homemakers.

She mentioned the variety of complaints acquired throughout this era was increased than what was reported within the months earlier than the lockdown was imposed.

The complaints have been acquired over the telephone, WhatsApp and e-mail, she mentioned.

All the instances will likely be adopted up from Monday and the fee will present counselling to the victims over the telephone, Gangopadhyay mentioned.

“In several instances the neighbours of the abused women informed us but when we reached out to the victims, they were afraid to air their grievances. Nevertheless, we asked them to get in touch with us whenever they felt comfortable,” she mentioned.

Sometimes, the victims can’t attain out to the fee or NGOs because the perpetrators are at all times close to them and likewise as a result of errant web connection, Gangopadhyay mentioned.

“We hope those who haven’t been able to come out in the open about domestic violence during the lockdown will do so when the restrictions are lifted,” she mentioned.

The fee can also be coordinating with ladies’s NGOs like ‘Swayam’ on the difficulty, Gangopadhyay mentioned.

Anuradha Kapoor of ‘Swayam’ mentioned they’re getting a number of telephone calls and emails from abused ladies however “there could be many more who are unable to reach out to us due to the lockdown”.

A spokesperson of one other NGO, ‘Sappho for Equality’ mentioned, “We are getting a lot of distress calls from both homemakers and professionals since the imposition of the lockdown. We are trying to counsel them over the phone and take up the matter with the police.”
