    New Delhi:

Former ICICI Financial institution CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar have been arrested by the CBI on Friday in a case linked to alleged irregularities in an over Rs 3,000-crore mortgage offered to the Videocon Group when she was heading the non-public sector financial institution.

Chanda Kochhar, 59, had give up as CEO and managing director of ICICI Financial institution in October 2018 over allegations that she favoured Videocon Group, a client electronics and oil and gasoline exploration firm.

Saying that she violated the financial institution’s code of conduct and inner insurance policies, ICICI stated a yr later that it could deal with Ms Kochhar’s exit as “termination for trigger”.

She has been accused of prison conspiracy and dishonest by the CBI for alleged irregularities in a mortgage of Rs 3,250 crore in 2012 to the Videocon Group, which turned a non-performing asset for the ICICI Financial institution.

A whistleblower alleged that Ms Kochhar’s husband Deepak Kochhar and her relations benefited from the dealings.

In response to the costs within the case, former Videocon chairman Venugopal Dhoot allegedly invested crores of rupees in NuPower Renewables, an organization based by Mr Kochhar, months after the Videocon group was granted a mortgage by the financial institution.

The mortgage was cleared by a committee of which Ms Kochhar was a member, alleges the CBI. The company says she abused her official place and “obtained unlawful gratification/undue profit by her husband from Dhoot for sanctioning Rs 300 crore to Videocon.”

It was a part of a Rs 40,000 crore mortgage which Videocon obtained from a consortium of 20 banks led by the State Financial institution of India.

Ms Kochhar, who labored at India’s third-biggest lender for over three many years, rising by the ranks to turn into one of the influential ladies bankers, has denied any wrongdoing.

“I reiterate that not one of the credit score selections on the financial institution are unilateral … the organisation design and construction obviate the opportunity of battle of curiosity,” she had stated in a press release.
