Kerala Dancer Told Can’t Perform As “Non-Hindus Not Allowed” In Temple

A dancer has claimed that the organisers of a temple competition in Kerala’s Thrissur telephoned her on Monday and cancelled her invitation to carry out, saying “non-hindus aren’t allowed” within the temple.

Dancer Mansiya VP, a Muslim-born lady, was to carry out on the 10-day Nationwide Pageant of Dance and Music organised by the famed Koodalmanikyam temple in Irinjalakuda. The competition is to be held from April 15 to 25. Round 800 artists are anticipated to carry out on the temple throughout the competition.

“The organisers phoned me and instructed me that I can’t carry out. When requested why, they mentioned non-Hindus aren’t allowed within the temple. I mentioned it’s a nationwide dance competition. I additionally mentioned that I’m a human being,” Mansiya was quoted saying by information company PTI.

The dancer, married to musician Shyam Kalyan, claims she was requested if she has transformed to Hinduism.

Koodalmanikyam Devaswom Chairman Pradeep Menon mentioned the choice was following the custom of the temple.

“Because the programme is being held contained in the temple premises, the choice was taken following the custom of the temple. As per the prevailing temple custom, non-Hindus aren’t allowed. Even the commercial for the programme clearly mentioned that solely Hindus want to use to carry out on the temple,” Mr Menon mentioned.

He mentioned the temple officers respect the artiste nevertheless it additionally has to observe the custom.

“We respect her so much. She is a superb artiste. However we have to observe the temple custom. That is all,” Mr Menon instructed the media.

Congress chief Shashi Tharoor, who’s the Lok Sabha member from Thrissur, has condemned the incident.

“I perceive some restrictions in some temples about entry to sanctum santorum. However it is a dance efficiency with different dancers contained in the temple premises. Shocked that the temple shouldn’t be permitting this,” he instructed information company ANI.
