Netherlands PM Announces Christmas “Lockdown” From Today Over Omicron Scare

The Hague:

The Netherlands will go into “lockdown” over the Christmas interval to attempt to cease a surge of the Omicron coronavirus variant, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte mentioned Saturday.

All non-essential outlets, eating places, bars, cinemas, museums and theatres should shut from Sunday till January 14, whereas colleges should shut till no less than January 9, Rutte mentioned.

The variety of friends that individuals are allowed of their home can also be being lower from 4 to 2, apart from Christmas Day on December 25.

“I stand right here tonight in a sombre temper,” Rutte instructed a televised press convention.

“To sum it up in a single sentence, the Netherlands will return into lockdown from tomorrow.

“It’s inevitable with the fifth wave and with Omicron spreading even quicker than we had feared. We should now intervene as a precaution.”

The pinnacle of the Dutch outbreak administration workforce, Jaap van Dissel, instructed the information convention that the Omicron variant would overtake the Delta pressure to grow to be dominant within the Netherlands by the top of the 12 months.
