There isn’t a proposal for granting full statehood to the Union Territory of Lakshadweep, the federal government knowledgeable Parliament Wednesday.
Minister of State for Residence Affairs Nityanand Rai stated this in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.
He was requested if the federal government has thought-about granting full statehood to Lakshadweep and what steps was it taking to extend the participation of the individuals of Lakshadweep within the democratic course of.
“No such proposal for full statehood for the Union Territory of Lakshadweep is into consideration,” the minister acknowledged.
Enough institutional preparations exist for the expression of the democratic aspirations of the individuals in thinly populated union territories equivalent to Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, he stated.
“Individuals residing within the UTs elect their Members of Parliament to the Lok Sabha,” Mr Rai acknowledged.
He additional added in his reply that Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu even have “a strong two tier panchayati raj system with village and district panchayat our bodies, by means of which individuals”s participation within the democratic course of is ensured”.
