PM Modi on Mann Ki Baat: Group Captain Varun Singh was awarded the Shaurya Chakra in August (File)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to the reminiscence of Group Captain Varun Singh – who was briefly the only real survivor of a horrific chopper crash in Tamil Nadu on December 8 that killed Chief of Defence Employees Common Bipin Rawat, his spouse, and 11 armed forces personnel.
Group Captain Singh suffered extreme burn accidents within the crash and, regardless of a courageous battle towards overwhelming medical odds, he died every week later on the Air Drive’s Command Hospital in Bengaluru.
Talking throughout ‘Mann ki Baat‘, the Prime Minister referred to a letter that emerged a day after the crash – written by Group Captain Singh – who had been awarded the Shaurya Chakra in September – to his alma mater to “encourage youngsters who would possibly really feel they’re meant to be mediocre”.
“… innumerable sons of Mom India, at the moment, contact these heights (referring to the Air Drive motto ‘contact the sky with glory’) on daily basis and train us an awesome deal. One such life was that of Group Captain Varun Singh, who was in that ill-fated helicopter that crashed this month,” he mentioned.
“Whereas Varun was in hospital, I noticed one thing on social media that touched my coronary heart… he had written a letter to his college principal. After studying that letter, my first thought was he didn’t neglect his roots regardless of touching heights of success. And, when it was time to rejoice, he wished to rejoice with the youngsters from his college,” the Prime Minister mentioned.
“It’s alright to be mediocre. Not everybody will excel at college and never everybody will be capable of rating within the 90s. Should you do, it’s an incredible achievement and have to be applauded.”

In his letter the Group Captain had written: “I used to be a really common scholar who barely scored 1st division in Class 12. I used to be equally common in sports activities and different co-curricular actions. However I had a ardour for airplanes and aviation…”
“… I at all times thought I used to be meant to be common and there was no level in making an attempt to excel. (However) after commissioning as a younger Flight Lieutenant in a fighter squadron, I realised I may do effectively if I put my thoughts and coronary heart to it…” he wrote.
All through his letter Group Captain Singh careworn on self-belief and, in an age the place younger minds face extraordinary stress from an academic system that appears designed to discourage, significantly those that are diffident and shy, his phrases should ring true for lakhs of youngsters.
“Don’t assume that Class 12 board marks resolve what you might be able to reaching in life. Consider in your self… work in the direction of it…” he signed off.
After the Group Captain died, the Prime Minister expressed his ‘excessive anguish’.
“Group Captain Varun Singh served the nation with pleasure, valour and utmost professionalism. I’m extraordinarily anguished by his passing away. His wealthy service to the nation won’t ever be forgotten. Condolences to his household and mates. Om Shanti,” he tweeted.
Final week the funeral of Group Captain Singh was held at his hometown of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, the place he was given an emotional farewell.
