A 60-year-old senior government of a non-public agency in Maharashtra’s Pune metropolis allegedly misplaced over Rs 3.98 crore to on-line fraudsters who lured her by way of social media, police mentioned on Thursday.
In response to the police, the girl misplaced over Rs 3.98 crore in 207 transactions to 27 totally different accounts over the previous couple of months.
“In April 2020, the girl obtained a buddy request on a social media platform from Britain. After befriending her and gaining her confidence over 5 months, the person instructed her that an iPhone has been despatched to her as a birthday reward,” police official Ankush Chintaman of the Cyber Cell mentioned.
In September, the person made her pay giant sums on the pretext of customs clearance for the reward at Delhi airport.
“The fraudsters known as her posing as courier company representatives, customized officers and requested her to pay extra sums on-line by saying that there was jewelry and international foreign money within the consignments,” the official mentioned.
Since September 2020, the girl misplaced Rs 3,98,75,500 and approached the cyber cell lately after she realised that she had been duped, he mentioned.
The Cyber Cell police station has registered an offence underneath related sections of the Indian Penal Code and Data Expertise Act, he added.
