A senior chief of the nation’s ruling BJP has sparked outrage by saying that women who put on “soiled garments” seem like Shurpanakha, a demoness from the Hindu epic Ramayana.
Kailash Vijayvargiya, the BJP basic secretary, made the remarks at a non secular operate organised in Indore on Thursday to mark the beginning anniversaries of Lord Hanuman and Mahavir.
“After I exit at night time and see younger individuals intoxicated, I really feel like giving them five-seven [slaps] to sober them up. I swear to God,” he stated.
“And the women put on such soiled garments… we consider ladies as goddesses… there isn’t any hint of that in them. They seem like Shurpanakha. God has given you an excellent physique, put on good garments. Please train your youngsters effectively, I’m very anxious,” he added.
Within the widespread variations of the Ramayana, Shurpanakha is the sister of the demon king Ravana. She is depicted as an unsightly and lustful creature who tries to seduce Lord Ram and his brother Lakshman. Once they reject her advances, she assaults them and Lakshman cuts off her nostril and ears.
Mr Vijayvargiya’s feedback drew sharp criticism from the opposition and social media customers, who accused him of misogyny and ethical policing.

Congress spokesperson Sangeeta Sharma stated, “BJP leaders humiliate ladies time and again. It reveals their pondering and their perspective. BJP chief Kailash Vijayvargiya ji calling ladies as Shurpankha and making objectionable feedback on their costume is suitable in impartial India. Apologize BJP!”
The BJP chief, who belongs to Indore, is thought for his controversial statements made with impunity. Final month, he claimed that after Independence and Partition, no matter was left of India constituted a “Hindu Rashtra”, overtly defiling the nation’s founding precept of secularism.
