Social media platform Twitter on Thursday moved the Supreme Court in search of quashing or consolidation of 16 FIRs lodged in opposition to it in 16 states after Canada-based separatist Sikh activist Gurpatwant Singh Panun’s offensive put up.
Showing for Twitter, senior advocate Sajan Poovayya advised a bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian that the social media platform had no management over posts made by third events and that it had suspended Panun’s account after a grievance from the Indian authorities.
And but, BJP’s Vinit Goenka appealed to all residents to file sedition circumstances in opposition to Twitter, leading to quite a few FIRs being lodged in opposition to the social media platform in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Karnataka, Delhi, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Maharashtra. The bench sought responses from these states and the Centre.
In its petition, Twitter mentioned, “A number of FIRs, throughout jurisdictions, registered in opposition to the petitioner in respect of the identical alleged tweet by a 3rd celebration on the Twitter platform is an abuse of course of, meant to harass and threaten. These complaints and FIRs are the results of a besmirching marketing campaign and are motivated by people who find themselves actively campaigning in opposition to the petitioner, being pushed by malice, with none precise foundation in regulation in any respect.”
Referring to the SC’s latest order in Arnab Goswami case quashing all FIRs, besides one, Twitter mentioned if the courtroom was not inclined to quash all of the FIRs, then it might consolidate all of the FIRs/complaints with the primary FIR lodged in Tinsukia, Assam.
