An “unknown actor” created a Sign account and used synthetic intelligence to contact authorities and international officers impersonating Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in keeping with a State Division cable obtained by CBS News.
The cable was despatched to “All Diplomatic and Consular Posts,” and alerted them that the account was created in mid-June 2025 with the show identify marco.rubio@state.gov.
“The person contacted not less than 5 non-Division people, together with three international ministers, a U.S. governor, and a U.S. member of Congress,” the cable mentioned. “The actor left voicemails on Sign for not less than two focused people, and in a single occasion, despatched a textual content message inviting the person to speak on Sign.”
In an announcement, the State Division mentioned it’s “conscious of this incident and is presently investigating this matter.” The Division mentioned it “constantly takes steps to enhance the division’s cybersecurity posture to forestall future incidents.”
